In-store demo experience apps for HMD devices
Deliverables
- Mobile app development
- Technical architecture
- Flutter integration
- Contentful integration
Long story short
For HMD we developed a retail demo experience (RDX) for in-store demo devices and an online demo experience (ODX) accessible via QR codes. Using Contentful and Flutter, we ensured real-time content updates and cross-platform functionality, accommodating diverse global market requests. This provides a user-friendly, interactive demo across multiple devices.
About HMD
HMD Global is a brand licensee and global producer of Android smartphones under the Nokia Phones brand. Operating in over 80 different countries and is the largest European smartphone manufacturer.
HMD sells devices via retailers across the world which require a demo experience on their demo devices in-store. Drawing the attention of customers walking by and providing an informative and interactive experience on the device.
Challenge
The request was to build an app RDX (Retail demo experience) but also a web based version ODX (Online demo experience) which is accessible via a QR code for customers in the store. Both channels required to have the same content and ease of modifying in real time. For the RDX customers would also need to be able to explore the device going outside of the app.
The myriad different requests from markets around the world on content, variants and functionality made this a challenge to navigate properly from the beginning to make we would make the app and experience future proof.
Solution
We chose to leverage Contentful already being used in the ecosystem to provide the content to both the RDX and ODX experience. Easy updating and familiar author experience for the marketing team.
Additionally, we chose Flutter because it is cross-platform, we can have both the Android app and the web app under a single codebase thus saving development time and it also offered close to native behavior required for some special features like video screensaver and app restart.
A landing page is available for markets to download the universal app, review language availability which the app automatically picks up from device settings and installation instructions.
Results
The universal app is already running for 4 devices and 2 more in the pipeline. Content updates can be done real time with no need to download the app again. Markets have options to request and select variant options for content due to the flexible setup.
Users have demo experiences that are enticing and easy to navigate the informative app and explore the device functionalities itself.
